Thomas — Georg Lendorff

Bavarian State Opera – Thomas

Opera by Georg Friedrich Haas

Thomas witnesses the death of his beloved friend Matthias in hospital. The dead body is examined one last time, washed and prepared for cremation. In the midst of the pain of parting, the confusing, absurd but also comforting dance of the medical and bureaucratic apparatus that takes care of Matthias begins.

Anna Sophie Mahler, together with stage designer Katrin Conan and video artist Georg Lendorff, creates the greatest possible distance to a naturalistic environment. The space forms a body that experiences and reflects the states of mind of the characters. The chamber orchestra is located inside the central object, which is only opened towards the end of the performance. Its content, the musicians, spills out onto the stage.
